Being a Larrie can bring so much comfort to those seeking acceptance and validation, but it can also be so emotionally exhausting to deal with the hate Larries receive. My experience in the fandom has been no different, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. The story of me falling down the rabbit hole is quite random.
I was going through a very rough time in uni, as I had just chosen my major.
Not only was the environment completely new to me, but I had to go out there and choose a major that none of my friends chose, which meant I attended all classes alone, I would be sitting on my own for hours daily without uttering a word. My anxiety was at its worst. I was struggling and I went spiraling most of the time. Academic validation was not so easy to accomplish anymore.
So, naturally, I spent a lot of time on the Internet, pretending YouTubers were my friends just like any depressed uni kid.
One night shortly before final exams, I was extremely stressed out and turned to YouTube to binge watch videos as a distraction. A very sus video suggestion popped up in my recommendations: James Corden kissing a random young man. I have no idea what possessed me to click the video, but I’m so glad I did! It introduced me to Harry Styles and, several hours and many, many compilation videos later, to the Larry universe. So, thank you James!
“Top 10 Larry Moments” appeared next, and then another, and another! They just kept coming. For once, the YouTube algorithm knew what it was doing.
A few videos in, I remember feeling relief for the first time in a very long time because “painted nails make Harry beautiful” and there’s “Nothing wrong with that!”.
Seeing the pure love they have for each other and their unconditional affection and support soothed me in many ways.
A couple of hours later, the sun was up, I was fonding at my screen, and I had a watching history of more than 100 larry videos.
When I showed up that day on campus, my friend was like “didn’t you have any sleep last night?”
And I was like, “so, what do you know about larry?!”
PS: A couple of days later, said friend would send me a “Harry is Louis’ baby” video, and we would spend the night larrying.
PPS: My mom would later comment when she sees me, that my smile was finally back.
